The song was first performed live during charity event Musikhjälpen on and it was broadcasted online by Swedish television. It was a rare but magic moment of peace and harmony in the midst of one of the most atrocious events in the 20th century. The following day, British and German soldiers met in no man’s land and exchanged gifts, took pictures and some even played football. Messages began to be shouted between the trenches. Historic factĭecember 24th, 1914: Late On Christmas Eve, British Expeditionary Force heard German troops in the trenches opposite them singing Christmas carols and saw lanterns and small fir trees along their trenches. We never used that before, we’ve only used a traditional church choir, borrowed old teachers and friends and they are still on the album or many of the tracks (.). Joakim Brodén: (.) one of the major things on "Christmas Truce" is it’s a gospel choir on that song. Joakim Brodén: (.) Like we did on Blood of Bannockburn, we put the bagpipes to set the scene, we have bagpipes and stuff to make people associate the song with Scotland, just like we had small bells and stuff in Christmas Truce to sort of make people connect this song with Christmas (.). So probably the one song I spent the most time with working on actively. So the pressure, because it will set the standard for the songwriting process (for the album - ed. The pressure of "it's gonna be the first song to be written about the new album", because we decided we were gonna go another one and one of the best stories deserves one of the best songs. I mean, we knew about the Christmas Truce since we were children basically. Joakim Brodén: It was one of the best stories we've ever heard. The next morning they just went back to the order of the day: blowing each other up." 
The is about Christmas Eve in 1914, where soldiers from both fronts left their trenches for one night to drink, smoke and have fun. It is a familiar and and impressive story. Joakim Brodén: "Both in terms of music and story in terms of story, I think this one really stand out. It has turned into a cinematic, super bombastic song."
It also fits in very well with Joakim's fondness for Savatage and Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Deep emotions that still have place during such a horrific war. The search for the right music was incredibly complicated, but we finally succeeded." Ĭhris Rörland: "It shows humanity in times of misery. It didn't have the right feeling or it just wasn't good enough. Everything we tried before for this story, was just not it. Joakim Brodén: "The story had been there for a while. This song took us years to create since we wanted the music to reflect the mood honestly and it was a big challenge, but we feel we managed to write a song that captures the spirit of this day, over a century ago." Not only was it the most requested topic from our fans, but it was, for us, the most emotional story from the war. Pär Sundström: "Christmas Truce was our highest priority when we decided to write songs about World War One.
Ending credit vocals (music video) by Floor Jansen. Additional music composed by Antti Martikainen. The keyboard melody of the song is taken from "Carol of the Bells", a popular Christmas carol. The song was released as the first single single from the album. The video for the song was released on 29th October 2021. The band didn't intend it to be a Christmas song, but it happens to talk about military history that takes time in Christmas, just like D-Day happened on 6th of June. 
It was the first song written for The War to End All Wars.
